Part-time employees in the U.S. may qualify for partial unemployment benefits if their hours or pay were involuntarily reduced or if they took part-time while looking for full-time employment. You must report all gross wages weekly. Benefits are reduced based on earnings, but some payments may still be received, extending total benefit duration.

With NYS DOL’s updated hours-based partial unemployment system, workers can work up to seven days weekly without losing full benefits if their weekly hours remain 30 or less and earnings are below the maximum gross benefit rate, excluding self-employment. Reductions are determined based on total weekly hours, not per day.

If your part-time earnings are lower than your weekly unemployment benefit, you could still receive full or partial payments. Part-time work usually involves less than 40 hours a week. All gross wages, including part-time pay before taxes or deductions, must be reported when certifying benefits, even if it seems less than your weekly benefit.
