Partial unemployment benefits in the U.S. are available for part-time workers whose hours or pay were cut involuntarily or who took part-time while seeking full-time work. Weekly reporting of all gross wages is required. Benefits decrease according to earnings, yet some payments may still be issued, potentially extending the overall benefit duration.

Under New York’s updated partial unemployment rules, workers can maintain full benefits while working up to seven days a week if they log 30 hours or less and earn below the maximum gross benefit rate, excluding self-employment. Benefit reductions are calculated in increments based on total weekly hours rather than daily work.

If your part-time income is less than your weekly unemployment benefit, you may still receive full or partial payments. Part-time work generally involves fewer than 40 hours per week. All gross wages, including part-time earnings before taxes or deductions, must be reported when certifying benefits, even if they appear lower than your weekly benefit.
