U.S. part-time workers can often receive partial unemployment benefits if their hours or pay were cut involuntarily or if they accepted part-time employment while seeking full-time work. Weekly reporting of all gross wages is required. Benefits decrease with earnings, yet some payments may still continue, potentially lengthening your benefit period.

New York’s partial unemployment program now calculates benefits based on total weekly hours. Workers can maintain full benefits if they work 30 hours or fewer and earn less than the maximum gross benefit rate, excluding self-employment. Reductions are applied incrementally according to total weekly hours, not daily work.

You may still get full or partial unemployment benefits if your part-time wages are under your weekly benefit amount. Part-time generally means fewer than 40 hours per week. When certifying, you must report all gross wages, including part-time income before taxes or deductions, even if they seem smaller than your benefit.
