In the U.S., part-time workers can often receive partial unemployment benefits if their hours or pay were reduced involuntarily, or if they took a part-time job while seeking full-time work. You must report all gross wages weekly. Benefits are reduced based on income, but partial payments may continue, extending your benefit period.

NYS DOL’s partial unemployment system now uses an hours-based approach. You can work up to seven days a week without losing full benefits if you work 30 hours or fewer and earn below the maximum gross benefit rate, excluding self-employment. Reductions are based on total weekly hours, not per day worked.

If your part-time earnings are below your weekly unemployment benefit, you might still get full or partial payments. Part-time generally means working under 40 hours a week. When certifying benefits, report all gross wages, including part-time pay before taxes or deductions, even if the total seems less than your weekly benefit.
