
Under normal circumstances, a motorcycle should not experience jerking in any gear while riding. However, the following three reasons can force the vehicle to exhibit this relatively rare phenomenon. 1. Improper operation: If the engine speed does not match the vehicle speed, a noticeable jerking phenomenon will occur, which is referred to as a sense of hesitation. This phenomenon typically only appears when the engine is at low speed in a high gear. 2. High-speed misfire: So-called high-speed misfire is a fault in the ignition system. Its symptoms are quite obvious—when the engine reaches a certain speed range, this phenomenon occurs. It is not directly related to the vehicle's gear but only to the engine speed. 3. Gear damage: If improper operation causes gear damage while the vehicle is in motion, this phenomenon will occur. This issue usually happens in a single gear, meaning it only appears when the transmission is engaged in a specific gear.

I've been riding motorcycles for over a decade, and the most annoying thing is encountering jerky riding. Last week, my own bike had this issue, and after checking for a long time, I found that the ignition coil had gotten wet—this often happens when riding in the rain. Spark plug carbon buildup or damaged high-voltage wires can also cause the engine to jerk. Another possibility is incorrect carburetor air-fuel mixture, which is especially common in older bikes. If you feel no response when twisting the throttle, first check if the fuel tank vent is clogged. If the fuel filter screen in the tank isn't replaced for three years, it will clog, and the fuel line being flattened by the seat can also cause poor fuel delivery. A dirty electronic throttle is more troublesome and requires special cleaner. Newbies often overlook chain issues! A loose chain can suddenly jam, feeling like a sharp tug. My student's bike had this problem—the chain was worn into sharp edges. Also, clutch slippage causes high revs but no movement when accelerating hard. Transmission oil must be changed every 20,000 km; if it's thick like asphalt, shifting becomes difficult. Low tire pressure makes riding exhausting, especially noticeable with a flat rear tire. Check chain tension weekly—it should depress about 1.5 cm with two fingers for optimal tightness.

The other day I saw a Kawasaki Ninja at the repair shop, and the stuttering issue was caused by a faulty throttle position sensor. This component inaccurately monitors throttle opening, leading to fuel delivery issues in fuel-injected bikes. The same problem can occur if you modify the exhaust without ECU tuning—my friend's bike started jerking after installing a straight pipe. It's common for small-displacement bikes to struggle with fuel delivery when carrying passengers uphill, often due to a dirty air filter. Be extra cautious during the rainy season—I've seen cases where cracked spark plug caps allowed moisture intrusion. If you notice stuttering, first check the warning light; if there's none, focus on inspecting the intake system.

Last year, I got a scare when the bike suddenly jerked while mountain riding—turned out to be fuel tank vacuum. Nowadays, new bikes come with a carbon canister system; if the solenoid valve gets stuck, the fuel pump can't draw fuel. For older bikes, it might be a bad kill switch contact, cutting power when vibrations get too strong. A faulty rectifier is even more dangerous—if the isn’t charging, the ride gets progressively rougher. I always carry a multimeter when working on bikes. First, check the battery voltage; if it’s below 13V after starting, the charging system has issues. For carbureted bikes, remember to inspect the float bowl fuel level—worn needle jets can also cause unstable fuel delivery.
