Getting a Canadian work permit generally involves obtaining a job offer from a Canadian employer, with an LMIA needed in many cases unless exempt. Applicants then complete an online IRCC application, submit documents such as a passport and employment letter, pay required fees, and attend a biometrics appointment to finalize the process.

Under new Canadian immigration policies, applying for a work permit at a port of entry is no longer available to most foreign nationals inside Canada. Initial permits and renewals must be submitted online. However, individuals entering Canada from abroad may still be allowed to apply at the border if they qualify.

Canadian work permits come in two types: employer-specific, tying you to a particular employer, job, and location, and open permits, which allow work for most employers without a job offer. Required documents include a job offer, LMIA if needed, passport, proof of qualifications, and sometimes proof of funds or a medical exam. Applications can be submitted online or at a visa application center.
