In the U.S., you can often get partial unemployment benefits while working part-time if your hours or pay were involuntarily reduced or if you took part-time work while looking for full-time employment. Weekly reporting of all gross wages is required. Benefits are reduced with earnings, but partial payments may continue, potentially extending your overall benefit period.

The NYS DOL’s hours-based system allows part-time work without losing full benefits. If your weekly hours do not exceed 30 and your earnings are below the maximum gross benefit rate, excluding self-employment, you can work seven days. Benefits are reduced incrementally based on total weekly hours, not daily.

If your weekly part-time earnings are less than your unemployment benefit, you can still receive full or partial payments. Part-time generally means working fewer than 40 hours per week. All gross wages, including part-time income before taxes or deductions, must be reported when certifying benefits, even if they seem under your weekly benefit.
