A Canadian work permit application usually begins with a formal job offer from a Canadian employer. In many situations, the employer must secure an LMIA unless the role qualifies for an exemption. Afterward, applicants submit an online application through IRCC, upload documents like passports and job offers, pay processing and biometrics fees, and complete biometrics.

Recent regulatory changes in Canada mean foreign nationals currently in the country generally cannot apply for work permits at ports of entry. Instead, applications for first-time permits and extensions must be filed online. Applicants coming from outside Canada may still apply at entry, provided they meet eligibility requirements.

There are two types of work permits in Canada. Employer-specific permits link you to a particular job, employer, and location, while open permits allow work for most employers without a job offer or LMIA. Documents usually include a job offer, LMIA if needed, passport, proof of qualifications, and financial or medical proof. Applications can be submitted online or at a visa application center.
