Function of the carburetor: The carburetor is a mechanical device that mixes a certain proportion of gasoline with air under the vacuum generated by the engine's operation. Components of the carburetor: The carburetor consists of a starting device, idle device, medium load device, full load device, and acceleration device. Depending on the engine's operating conditions, the carburetor automatically adjusts the mixture concentration and outputs the corresponding amount of air-fuel mixture. To ensure uniform mixing, the carburetor also has the effect of atomizing the fuel for smooth engine operation.

Last time I helped my cousin repair his old CG125, we encountered poor atomization in the carburetor. The most obvious symptom was that the engine was extremely difficult to start—even after kicking until our legs were sore, it wouldn't fire up. At idle, the bike would sputter like it had asthma, and the exhaust pipe would pop and bang. The most annoying part was the sluggish throttle response; it felt like the power was being choked even when giving it gas, and the RPMs wouldn't climb. Riding it felt jerky, especially when going uphill. I also noticed the spark plug was soaked in gasoline when I pulled it out, and the smell of fuel was very strong. This condition was particularly fuel-hungry, burning nearly half a liter more than usual over 50 kilometers. Older motorcycles are prone to this issue, often due to clogged jets in the carburetor or incorrect fuel levels in the float chamber.

My little motorcycle has been having this issue lately. When starting cold, I have to repeatedly adjust the choke for a long time. At traffic lights, the RPM suddenly drops, and it has stalled several times. The most obvious symptom is the engine making a muffled sound during acceleration, and even with the throttle wide open, it can only slowly pick up speed. My friends joke that my bike climbs hills like an old ox. Once, while riding at high speed, there was even a backfire with sparks shooting out of the exhaust pipe with a bang. The mechanic said this is a classic case of poor atomization, where the overly rich air-fuel mixture leads to incomplete combustion. After cleaning the carburetor, the mechanic specifically replaced the air filter, saying a dirty air filter can also affect intake and cause abnormal atomization. Now, the throttle response is much more sensitive, and the fuel consumption has returned to normal levels.

When the carburetor's atomization is poor, the motorcycle becomes extremely difficult to ride. Firstly, acceleration feels weak, and throttle response is sluggish, like stepping on cotton. At idle, the tachometer needle jumps erratically, and the body vibrates so much that the rearview mirror becomes blurry. Cold starts are difficult, and even after warming up, acceleration remains jerky. You may notice black smoke from the exhaust pipe with a strong gasoline smell. Upon removing the spark plug, the electrodes appear wet and heavily carbon-fouled. Prolonged operation in this condition severely damages the engine, leading to carbon buildup on the piston crown. It's recommended to first check if the air filter is clogged and whether the fuel lines are clean.

When the carburetor atomization is poor, the air-fuel mixture ratio becomes unstable. The symptoms are particularly typical: cold starts require repeatedly pulling the choke, and acceleration remains sluggish even after the engine warms up. The idle speed fluctuates erratically, accompanied by backfiring from the exhaust pipe. During uphill climbs, the power delivery becomes intermittent, and even flooring the throttle fails to increase speed. Fuel consumption spikes dramatically, and the spark plugs appear blackened and damp when removed. In severe cases, gasoline may drip from the exhaust pipe. This condition is often caused by clogged jets or worn float needle valves. Sometimes, poor fuel quality forming gum deposits can also block the spray holes. High-humidity areas during the rainy season are especially prone to this issue.

Poor atomization is most intuitively felt as a power restriction. The engine sound becomes muffled, and surging starts when the RPM exceeds 3,000. During acceleration, the car jerks like it's having spasms, and the exhaust pops when decelerating. It often stalls at red lights, requiring throttle input to restart. Inspection reveals black oil stains at the exhaust pipe outlet, and the inner walls of the air filter box are wet when opened. Carburetor leaks are also common. During repairs, it's advisable to clean the throttle body simultaneously, as fuel system contamination is often a systemic issue. When refueling, avoid pumping the bottom fuel - the sediment concentration is highest right after tanker truck refills.
