Not really. The "self-driving" features you can get on a new car today are more like a super-smart cruise control. You still have to keep your hands on the wheel and pay attention the whole time. My car has this tech, and it's great for reducing fatigue on long highway drives, but it's not a chauffeur. It sometimes makes mistakes, so you can't just sit back and relax. True self-driving cars are still being tested by companies, not sold to folks like us.

Legally and technically, no. The biggest issue is liability. If a car were truly self-driving and got into an accident, who is at fault—the owner or the manufacturer? That question isn't fully resolved. Current systems are sold as "driver-assist" for this reason; the legal responsibility remains with you, the person in the driver's seat. Manufacturers are very careful to state that these features require active driver supervision, which is the opposite of a fully self-driving car.

From a tech perspective, we're in an intermediate stage. The hardware—sensors, cameras, and computing power—is advancing rapidly in many new models. However, the software and artificial intelligence needed to handle all the unpredictable situations on the road are still under development. It's the difference between having a powerful computer and having a mind that can reason like a human. We have the hardware, but the "brain" isn't consumer-ready yet. Full autonomy is a software challenge more than a hardware one at this point.

Think of it this way: you can't buy a car that drives itself, but you can buy a car with a really good co-pilot. This co-pilot can keep you in your lane and a safe distance from the car ahead, which is fantastic for boring highway commutes. But it gets confused by construction zones, won't see a debris pile in time, and can't navigate a busy city street. You're still the pilot in command. It's an amazing aid, but buying it doesn't mean you're buying a self-driving car. You're buying a significant driving aid.
