To effectively remove blood stains from a sofa, it is crucial to act quickly and always use cold water. Using warm or hot water should be avoided, as the heat can set the protein in the blood, making the stain much more difficult or even impossible to remove.
A primary method for treating a blood stain involves hydrogen peroxide. However, because hydrogen peroxide can have a bleaching effect on some fabrics, it is essential to first test it on a small, inconspicuous area of your sofa. If the fabric shows no adverse reaction, you can apply a small amount of hydrogen peroxide directly onto the stain. It will begin to fizz as it reacts with the blood. Use a clean cloth to gently blot the area, absorbing both the solution and the stain. Avoid rubbing, as this can spread the stain and damage the fabric fibers.
For a gentler alternative, a solution of cold water and a small amount of mild dish soap can be effective. Mix a few drops of soap into a cup of cold water. Dip a clean cloth into the soapy water and blot the stain, working from the outside edge inward to prevent it from spreading. Once the stain has lifted, use a second cloth dampened with only cold water to blot the area and rinse away any soap residue. Finally, blot the spot with a dry towel to absorb as much moisture as possible and allow it to air dry completely.
