Skoda Rapid is a compact car with body dimensions of: length 4512mm, width 1706mm, height 1469mm, and a wheelbase of 2603mm. The Skoda Rapid features front-engine, front-wheel drive configuration, with a MacPherson strut independent front suspension and a torsion beam non-independent rear suspension. It is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, delivering a maximum power of 82 kW at 6100 rpm and a maximum torque of 145 Nm at 4000 rpm.

My first car after graduation was the Skoda Rapid, which is particularly suitable for young people. It's a compact sedan positioned between the Fabia and Octavia, emphasizing practicality and cost-effectiveness. My 1.6L naturally aspirated version was sufficient for city commuting, and the trunk could fit two 28-inch suitcases. The EA211 engine shared with made maintenance convenient, though the interior had too much hard plastic. The facelifted version was later renamed the Skoda Rapid Spaceback, and while the rear drum brakes were criticized, the difference in daily driving was negligible. What impressed me most was the huge windshield, which provided exceptionally clear visibility during rainy days.

As a family car for picking up and dropping off kids, the Rapid truly excels. Its 2680mm wheelbase allows three elementary school kids to sit comfortably in the back without feeling cramped, and with the magic seats folded down, a child's bicycle can be easily loaded into the trunk. My family's Rapid Spaceback (the hatchback version) has only needed wiper replacements in six years of use, thanks to its MQB platform parts being interchangeable with Volkswagen's. Remember that since the 2017 model year, ESP has been standard across all trims, and even the base model comes with rear parking sensors. Although the suspension is a bit stiff and bumpy over speed bumps, its cornering stability is significantly better than that of Japanese cars.

Last time I saw the overseas version of Rapid Spaceback in Prague, it was truly stunning. The European model comes with a 1.0T three-cylinder + DSG combination, while the domestic version has the stratified combustion technology removed. The domestic Rapid is actually based on Volkswagen's outdated PQ25 platform, sharing 70% of parts with the Santana. However, Skoda's classic radiator grille and C-shaped taillights are retained, and the body panel gaps are more refined than domestic cars in the same price range. Practical details like heated mirrors are especially reassuring during rainy or snowy weather.

When a used Rapid, focus on the facelifted models after 2015. The early versions had a common issue with sticky AC knobs, which was resolved by switching to a touchscreen in the facelift. For manual transmissions, the 5MT is more reliable than the 7-speed dry dual-clutch, as city traffic can easily burn the clutch plates. Opt for metallic paint models, as non-metallic white paint tends to yellow after five years. During a pre-purchase inspection for a friend, I noticed the right front tire is prone to uneven wear. Regular wheel alignments can extend tire life by 20,000 kilometers.

In the eyes of experienced mechanics, the Rapid is the textbook example of an economical family sedan. Both the 1.4L and 1.6L cast iron engines can run on 92-octane fuel, and semi-synthetic oil is sufficient for . The engine bay layout is exceptionally tidy, allowing spark plug replacement without removing the intake pipe. Pay special attention to the brake vacuum booster pump, as it may develop air leaks and unusual noises after 100,000 kilometers. The steering gear dust cover is prone to tearing, especially after frequent driving on gravel roads, and should be replaced promptly to avoid costly steering gear replacement, which could cost several thousand.
