
Engine is the RSH engine. What is a 1.6 engine: A 1.6 engine means the car has a displacement of 1.6 liters, where L stands for liters. The engine displacement is an important parameter for measuring a car and is usually indicated on the body or rear of the vehicle. Engine numerical values: The front part includes the product series code, generation symbol, and regional or enterprise code, which manufacturers can choose as needed with corresponding letters, but must be approved and filed by the industry standard's standardization unit. The middle part consists of the cylinder number symbol, cylinder arrangement symbol, stroke symbol, and cylinder diameter symbol. The rear part is composed of structural feature symbols and usage feature symbols. The tail part is the differentiation symbol.

I remember the new Jetta was equipped with several 1.6L engines! The classic models before 2013 generally used the EA111 series BJT engine with cast iron cylinder blocks, which were sturdy and cheap to repair—even roadside mechanics were familiar with them. Later, the facelifted models switched to the EA211 series CPD engine, which was entirely aluminum and about a dozen kilograms lighter, reducing fuel consumption by around half a liter. Most post-2016 models on the road now use the CKA variant, delivering 131 horsepower—a bit stronger than the older versions. Though upgraded in technology, still follows Volkswagen's usual approach, and it runs fine on regular 92-octane fuel.

Recently, I helped a friend look for a used Jetta and specifically researched this engine. For the 1.6L models produced from 2010 to 2019, there are essentially three core variants: the early BJT model with a maximum power of 74kW, like a diligent old ox; the mid-term CPD model, which maintained the same power but was lighter; and the later CKA model, which was upgraded to 81kW. All three variants can run on 92-octane gasoline, use 5W-40 oil, and have parts that cost just a few dozen bucks.

Having run an auto repair shop for ten years, I've disassembled hundreds of 1.6L engines from new Jettas. The piston rings in the older EA111 models are prone to carbon buildup, so it's recommended to clean them every 30,000 kilometers. The CPD variant of the EA211 series features a plastic oil pan that can crack if the lift is positioned incorrectly. The post-2018 CKA model saw the most significant upgrades, switching from chain drive to a quieter toothed belt, though it requires replacement every 80,000 kilometers.

After checking the repair manual, it's confirmed that the new Jetta 1.6L engines are categorized by year: 2010-2012 models use BJT (EA113 platform), 2013-2015 transition period had mixed installations of BJT and CPD, and post-2016 models all use CPD/CKA from the EA211 platform. The actual driving experience shows little difference, with the high-power CKA version having slightly faster acceleration after 3000 rpm. Urban fuel consumption is around 7L for all versions.

According to the manufacturer's technical bulletin, the engine model of the 1.6L New Jetta can be identified by the suffix on the nameplate: BJT corresponds to models before 2012, with the 8th digit of the VIN being C; CPD is commonly found in 2013-2015 models, featuring a 'TSI' label on the engine cover sticker but actually using port injection; the current CKA engine block has a laser-etched QR code, and the software version number SQ can be read with a diagnostic tool, with the fuel injection logic having been modified three times.
