
National MIIT officially announced a combined fuel consumption of 7.1L/100km. The Forester was first introduced in February 1997. The Forester combines the characteristics of multi-purpose vehicles and passenger cars, which can be referred to as a "crossover" model by modern standards. Additional information: Performance-wise: The engine-equipped configuration model enhances wheel torsional rigidity and rear suspension subframe mounting point rigidity by adding rear support auxiliary frames. Effect: Achieves performance levels equivalent to gasoline vehicles in all aspects including handling stability, vibration and noise performance, and ride comfort.

I've been driving this Forester for two years now, and the fuel consumption really depends on the specific model. I bought the 2.0L naturally aspirated version, and in city traffic with congestion, the dashboard shows it can go slightly over 10L/100km, but on the highway, it immediately drops to around 7L/100km. As for the new 2.5L version, a colleague mentioned that urban commuting generally fluctuates around 11L/100km. The hybrid version is more fuel-efficient, though—I've seen someone in the car owners' group share data showing 6.8L/100km. The all-wheel-drive system does consume a bit more fuel, but the grip is indeed stable in rain or snow. I recommend refueling before the low fuel light comes on; it's best to fill up when the tank is down to a quarter full, as running on low fuel for extended periods can damage the fuel pump.

Last week I took my family on a long-distance trip in the Forester and specifically recorded the fuel consumption. Filled with 95-octane gasoline and running AC throughout the journey, cruising at 120 km/h on the highway, the trip computer showed 7.3L/100km after 500 kilometers. However, it's much more fuel-consuming when shuttling kids in the city - easily exceeding 11L/100km when stuck daily in school zone traffic. The full-time AWD system does consume slightly more fuel than FWD vehicles, but provides exceptional stability when cornering on icy roads. Fuel consumption increases by about 0.5L when the trunk is fully loaded with camping gear, and remember maintaining tire pressure at 2.5 bar helps improve fuel efficiency.

Having driven both the old and new Forester models, the new FB engine is indeed more fuel-efficient. The previous 2.5L naturally aspirated engine typically consumed around 12 liters in city driving, but with the adoption of direct injection technology, it can now be kept under 10 liters. The hybrid version is particularly suitable for congested roads, as the electric motor doesn't consume any fuel during startup. However, fuel consumption still increases by about 1.5 liters when using the heater and snow tires in winter. Using the steering wheel paddle shifters effectively can save fuel, especially when manually downshifting on downhill slopes.

Actual tests on the Forester's three powertrains: the 2.0L model averages about 8.5L in suburban commutes, while the 2.5L version reaches around 9.8L. The hybrid is the most fuel-efficient, with a colleague's model consuming only 7.2L in city driving. Air conditioning significantly impacts fuel consumption; running it at maximum in summer increases usage by about 1L. Using 0W-20 engine oil saves approximately 0.3L compared to 5W-30, and regularly cleaning the throttle body can also reduce fuel consumption. Avoid carrying too much weight in the car—every extra 100kg increases fuel usage by about 0.6L.

The fuel consumption of the Forester is highly dependent on driving habits! When I drive gently, the gauge shows 8.3L, but when in a hurry and stepping hard on the accelerator, it jumps directly to 11L. The most fuel-efficient way is to keep the RPM under 2000 when starting, and maintaining a speed of 90-100 km/h on the highway offers the best economy. Installing a roof box increases wind resistance, adding about 1L to the fuel consumption. The 2.5L model consumes nearly 2L more fuel in S mode compared to I mode, but it does make overtaking much more satisfying. Regularly changing the engine oil and the three filters is crucial, otherwise, fuel consumption will quietly increase.
