Contamination of the catalytic converter is a costly repair, as the oil's residue can permanently clog its honeycomb structure, requiring replacement.

The most severe mechanical risk is hydrostatic lock, or "hydrolock," though it's less common with oil than coolant. If an enormous overfill forces a large volume of liquid oil into a cylinder via the intake or past piston rings, the piston may be unable to complete its compression stroke. Since liquids are incompressible, this can bend connecting rods, crack pistons, or break the crankshaft, resulting in total engine failure.
