
Start from 1st gear, when the speed reaches 15km/h, you can shift to 2nd gear; when the speed reaches 25km/h, you can shift to 3rd gear; when the speed reaches 35km/h, you can shift to 4th gear; when the speed reaches 45km/h, you can shift to 5th gear. Gear shifting operation: Depress the clutch pedal – quickly release the accelerator – shift to the corresponding gear – match the accelerator according to the gear, or do not press the accelerator, quickly lift the clutch pedal to the semi-engagement state – gently release the clutch pedal after the clutch is engaged. I've been driving manual transmission cars for over a decade, and the relationship between gears and speed is actually a general range. Typically, you start in first gear, shift to second around 20 km/h, third around 40, fourth at 60, and fifth when exceeding 70. But honestly, you shouldn't just on the speedometer - listening to the engine sound and feeling the vibrations are more important. If the RPM drops below 1500, you're lugging the engine; if it's still roaring above 2500 RPM, it's time to upshift. You need to adjust flexibly when driving on mountain roads or with full load - downshift early when climbing to maintain power, and use lower gears to control speed when descending for safety.

For manual transmission shifting, it's more scientific to primarily refer to the tachometer. I'm accustomed to shifting between 2000 to 2500 RPM. After starting in 1st gear, shift to 2nd when speed exceeds 15 km/h, around 30 km/h for 3rd gear, 50 km/h for 4th, and use 5th gear after 70 km/h. However, each car's transmission gear ratio differs - my old Jetta could reach 80 km/h in 3rd gear, while a friend's new car vibrates severely past 60 km/h in 3rd. Remember to shift at slightly higher RPM when the engine is cold to avoid stalling. During break-in period, avoid prolonged low-RPM high-speed driving as it damages the engine.

Driving schools teach conservative gear-shifting timings, but in reality, modern cars have much better power. When I drive a manual, I shift from 1st to 2nd gear immediately after starting, and 3rd gear can pull from 35 to 65 km/h, making overtaking especially satisfying. On highways, cruising in 5th gear between 80 to 110 km/h is the most fuel-efficient. Just remember not to keep the RPM consistently below 1200 or above 3000. Different car models vary greatly—German cars have strong low-end torque, while Japanese cars need higher revs. Listen to the engine: if it sounds sluggish, downshift; if it screams, upshift.

The most fuel-efficient shifting method is to upshift early. I usually shift at 1500 rpm: shift to 2nd gear immediately after starting in 1st, engage 3rd at 20 km/h, 4th at 40 km/h, and 5th at 60 km/h. Driving this way saves half a liter per 100 km. However, during rapid acceleration, downshift with rev-matching—drop directly from 5th to 3rd by pressing the clutch, blip the throttle before releasing it to match revs smoothly and avoid jerking. On rainy slippery roads, avoid low-gear high-rpm to prevent tire spin. Don't let the engine linger at 1500 rpm for extended periods to reduce carbon buildup.

Shifting timing depends on power demand. On flat roads, shift at 2000 rpm: 1st gear for 0-15 km/h, 2nd for 15-30, 3rd for 30-50, 4th for 50-70, and 5th for above 70. When climbing, downshift early at the base of the hill, keeping rpm above 2500 for sufficient power. For overtaking, drop two gears directly, e.g., from 5th at 60 km/h straight to 3rd, reaching 4000 rpm for quick acceleration. On steep descents, use manual mode to lock in a lower gear, using engine braking for safer speed control than constant brake application.
