
Commonly known as the vehicle computer or onboard computer, it is one of the core electronic components in modern automobiles. Common causes of ECU damage are as follows: 1. During welding repairs on the vehicle frame, the ECU wire connections were not disconnected. This is because welding repairs on the frame can generate extremely high induced electromotive force due to current changes, which can harm the ECU through the wiring. 2. When the is low, using a silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) charger can produce high-order harmonics that damage the ECU. 3. The ECU in my old truck calculates intake air volume, fuel injection timing, and even governs the fuel pump speed in the tank. Last winter's hard starting was caused by the ECU detecting abnormal water temperature and over-fueling, which flooded the spark plugs. In modern cars with 48V mild hybrid systems, the ECU can also direct the electric motor to provide additional power. However, be cautious about water ingress—my neighbor's ECU short-circuited after driving through water, causing the engine to enter limp mode, with the speed stubbornly refusing to exceed 40 km/h.

Having worked in the auto factory for over a decade, I've lost count of how many ECU modules I've replaced. Essentially, it's a microcomputer with chips like processors and memory inside. The newer domain controllers in modern cars are even more impressive – like the German brand we assemble, where body control, automatic parking, and adaptive cruise are all integrated into a single controller. Interestingly, the OBD interface can access hidden ECU data – last time I helped a customer pull up the automatic headlight leveling calibration menu. I remember when studying for the technician certification, the textbook stated that the ECU is equivalent to the vehicle's central nervous system.
