
ECO stands for the car's economical driving mode function. ECO is an English abbreviation formed by combining Ecology (environmental protection), Conservation (energy saving), and Optimization (power). The Eco mode is further divided into active eco driving mode and non-active eco driving mode. When the ECO indicator light on the dashboard lights up, it indicates that the vehicle's economy mode has been activated. Eco mode is categorized into active and non-active types. The difference lies in the fact that the active mode has its own dedicated button, allowing the driver to choose whether to enable it. When the driver presses the ECO mode switch, the dashboard indicator light immediately illuminates, and the vehicle automatically begins adjusting settings such as throttle opening, transmission shift logic, and air conditioning output power. Non-active ECO mode does not have a dedicated button. When the dashboard ECO indicator light turns on, it serves merely as a reminder. The ECO system automatically evaluates your driving behavior. If your current driving operation achieves the optimal fuel supply, the dashboard will simultaneously display the ECO indicator light. Most vehicles use the active ECO driving mode, meaning they have a dedicated switch button. Therefore, during daily driving, you can enable ECO mode. However, it is unnecessary to activate ECO mode when driving at speeds exceeding 120 km/h, during idle parking, in N/P gear, or in manual mode—especially when climbing hills. Doing so would not reflect the fuel-saving characteristics of ECO mode and could also affect performance. Additionally, ECO mode typically becomes ineffective under the following conditions: When the vehicle speed exceeds 120 kilometers per hour, the system prioritizes speed, causing the ECO mode to automatically deactivate. During idle parking or when in N/P gear or manual mode, ECO mode may also become ineffective. When high torque output is required, such as when climbing a hill, the engine control unit prioritizes ensuring sufficient power to drive the vehicle, and the ECO mode will not operate.

As a long-term user of the Grand Cherokee, I deeply appreciate the practicality of ECO mode. After pressing that green button on the center console, the entire driving experience noticeably changes – the throttle response slows down, acceleration becomes gentler, and it feels like the vehicle is deliberately controlling its temper. In this mode, the transmission upshifts earlier, keeping the engine in low RPM ranges as much as possible. I particularly enjoy activating it during highway cruising, especially on long trips where fuel consumption can drop by around 10%. However, when needing sudden acceleration for overtaking or climbing mountain roads, I promptly deactivate it, as the feeling of restricted power is quite noticeable.

ECO stands for Economy Driving Mode, primarily optimizing the vehicle's fuel efficiency. When activated, the engine system restricts fuel injection, smoothens the power output curve, and automatically adjusts shift logic to maintain RPM within the economical range. The air conditioning system also reduces power to aid fuel savings. In actual driving, you may notice lighter steering, though vehicle responsiveness does become slightly sluggish. Personally, I recommend using it cautiously in heavy traffic, as frequent start-stop cycles may cause uneven power delivery.

ECO mode saves fuel by limiting power output. When the green leaf icon illuminates on the dashboard, it indicates the vehicle is operating at maximum efficiency. This system intelligently adjusts engine fuel delivery strategy and transmission gear ratios, sacrificing some acceleration for improved fuel economy. Particularly useful for large-displacement models like the Grand Cherokee, I frequently activate it during urban commuting, saving significant fuel costs annually.

After pressing the central ECO button, the Grand Cherokee will switch to a more fuel-efficient operating mode. Throttle response is reduced, the transmission shifts up more aggressively, and even the air conditioning output is slightly decreased. Based on my experience, activating this mode during slow urban driving can improve fuel economy, but it's best to turn it off when overtaking on highways or driving on mountain roads. Note that an indicator light will appear on the dashboard when activated, and prolonged use won't harm the vehicle. If sudden power is needed, simply deactivating the mode will restore normal performance.

The most frequently used feature in my Grand Cherokee is the ECO mode. When activated, the engine becomes more docile, with limited but smoother power output. In this state, the transmission shifts up more diligently, and the air conditioning fan speed automatically reduces slightly. It does save fuel for daily use, but it's safer to turn it off when fully loaded on uphill roads or during high-speed overtaking. It needs to be reactivated after each ignition, so the most reasonable way to use it is to toggle it flexibly based on road conditions.
