An EFI motorcycle with fuel and spark failing to start is usually caused by insufficient cylinder pressure due to cold weather and degraded engine oil performance. Other reasons for a motorcycle failing to start are as follows: Fuel system faults: Mainly caused by fuel switch (no fuel flow), fuel filter (clogged), carburetor (no fuel flow or overly rich mixture), or bent fuel pipes. Electrical faults: Short circuits in electrical components (e.g., ignition switch, ignition coil, ignition module, or magneto failure) or open circuits caused by loose wiring harness connectors. Air pressure faults: Insufficient cylinder compression, improper air filter intake resistance, or engine intake/exhaust faults, etc.

My old EFI motorcycle had this exact issue before - fuel pump sounds normal, gasoline smell is present, spark plug shows perfect spark, but it just wouldn't start. After hours of troubleshooting, found out the crankshaft position sensor was dead - this component hides on the engine side, any dirt or improper gap will make it stop working immediately. Another time the ECU got waterlogged and kept throwing false trouble codes, but disconnecting the negative terminal for ten minutes miraculously revived it. Oh, and a clogged fuel filter can also cause insufficient fuel supply - don't be fooled by a full tank, the injectors might be starving. These kinds of failures are the most frustrating, you really need an OBD scanner to read trouble codes properly.

Having played with modified EFI cars for ten years, I've encountered similar situations three times. Besides the routine checks on the air filter and fuel pressure, special attention should be paid to the throttle position sensor. Last time, my car's sensor plug was loose by half a millimeter, causing the ECU to lose the throttle opening signal and cut off fuel directly. Backfiring from the exhaust pipe is a typical symptom. Also, for those who have modified the circuit, check the relays. Once, the contacts of my ignition relay were burnt out—it looked like it was powered but couldn't handle the load. Nowadays, repair shops tend to replace the ECU directly, but in fact, 80% of the time it's due to oxidized wiring harness connectors.

Last week, my commuter car had the same issue. After pushing it to the repair shop, they found the fuel injector was stuck. The mechanic said the fuel injection volume in EFI cars is precisely calculated by the ECU, and too many impurities in the gasoline can easily cause the needle valve to stick. There's also a small detail: EFI cars need to pull the clutch when starting. If the clutch sensor is faulty in some models, the ECU won't allow ignition. The voltage must also not drop below 12V. Even if the starter sounds strong, the car won't start if the ECU doesn't get enough working voltage. In the end, spending 80 bucks to replace the crankshaft sensor fixed the problem.

Check four key points: The intake pressure sensor covered in sludge may send incorrect signals; internal cracks in the ignition coil cause failure during cold starts; rusted ECU ground wires lead to signal disruption; a clogged fuel tank vent valve creates a vacuum lock. Particularly, vacuum leaks are the hardest to detect—spray carburetor cleaner at the intake manifold joints, and any fluctuation in RPM indicates a leak. Fuel injection systems are delicate; high-pressure car wash sprays near sensor areas could potentially cause hidden issues.

Try Turning the Key to ON Position and Wait Five Seconds for the Fuel Pump to Build Pressure Before Starting. You Can Also Temporarily Start by Unplugging the Oxygen Sensor Connector, Which Is the ECU's Emergency Mode. The Most Bizarre Case Was When My Helmet Interfered With the EFI Signal - Moving the Helmet Away Solved It.
