
Hybrid electric vehicles include: Corolla Hybrid, K5 Hybrid, BYD Tang DM, Honda Accord Hybrid, Lexus ES300h, etc. Taking the 2020 Corolla Hybrid as an example, it belongs to the compact car category with body dimensions of: length 4635mm, width 1775mm, height 1470mm, and a wheelbase of 2700mm. The 2020 Corolla Hybrid features a MacPherson strut front suspension and a torsion beam rear suspension. It is equipped with a 1.8L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 99PS, a maximum power of 73kW, and a maximum torque of 142Nm, paired with an electronic continuously variable transmission.

I've been driving a hybrid Corolla for three years. Currently, mainstream hybrid systems are divided into two categories. One type is the non-plug-in hybrid like Toyota and Honda, where the engine charges the battery, and the car mainly relies on the electric motor for starting and low-speed driving. Choosing which type depends on charging convenience. For those who frequently drive long distances, non-plug-in hybrids might be more worry-free.

Last month, while accompanying a friend to look at cars, I realized there are so many variations in the hybrid lineup: the batteries in mild hybrids (HEVs) are particularly small, offering only a few kilometers of pure electric range, but the engine continuously charges the within its high-efficiency zone. Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) can be charged externally, with batteries over ten times larger than those in HEVs, and can function as electric vehicles if charging is convenient. There are few charging piles in our community, so I spent half a month researching when choosing a hybrid. Currently, the market is dominated by three main types: non-plug-in hybrids like THS/Honda i-MMD, represented by the Camry Hybrid; plug-in hybrids such as BYD DM-i/Great Wall Lemon DHT, which qualify for green license plates; and range-extended hybrids like the Li ONE, which rely entirely on electric motors. The 48V mild hybrid system, which was popular a couple of years ago, is now less common as it only saves about 8% fuel. Actually, the biggest hassle with plug-in hybrids is the need to charge daily to maximize their advantages. In the end, I chose the Accord Hybrid, which doesn’t require charging and is fuel-efficient enough at 4.2L per 100km in the city.

When helping my daughter choose a hybrid car, I found the key lies in the power coupling method: Toyota's THS with planetary gears is complex but smooth, like the CT200h; the parallel structure of BYD's Tang DM focuses more on performance; Honda's CR-V hybrid uses clutch switching for more direct power distribution. Among plug-in hybrids, the Great Wall Mocha DHT with direct drive function is more fuel-efficient on highways than range extenders. Interestingly, the Lynk & Co 09 hybrid uses a dual-motor series-parallel system, capable of running 140 km purely on a full charge. Now, hybrid transmissions have evolved to 3-speed DHT, but simpler structures generally mean lower failure rates.

Last week I test drove my friend's C-Class plug-in hybrid, let's talk about the characteristics of luxury brand hybrids. German brands generally focus on plug-in hybrids, like the 535Le with 95km pure electric range but its battery occupies trunk space. Lexus hybrids don't require plugging in but are fuel-efficient, with the RX450h achieving 7.2L/100km in real-world tests. Among new energy vehicles, the Li L9 extended-range model offers decent chassis refinement, though its 95-octane fuel + electric drive costs 18% more than gasoline cars. Actually, domestic hybrid technology has late-mover advantages - the Han DM-p accelerates in 3.7 seconds, even faster than Porsche Panamera hybrid. One reminder: plug-in hybrids generally have lower resale value than conventional hybrids, so those with short ownership cycles might prefer Toyota hybrids.
