Applying decals successfully is all about surface preparation and technique. A clean, warm surface and a method called the "wet application" are key to a bubble-free, professional-looking result. You'll need the decal, a spray bottle with soapy water (a few drops of dish soap per quart), a squeegee or credit card, a microfiber cloth, and a heat gun or hair dryer.
Start by thoroughly cleaning the application area with isopropyl alcohol to remove any wax, grease, or dirt. Once clean, don't touch the surface with your bare hands. If the decal is large or complex, tape it in place with painter's tape to create a "hinge" so it doesn't shift.
The Wet Application Method:
Peel off the paper backing, leaving the decal on the application tape. Generously spray the adhesive side of the decal and the car's surface with the soapy water. This creates a slippery layer that allows you to reposition the decal easily. Carefully place the decal onto the car.
Use your squeegee to press firmly from the center outwards, forcing the soapy water out from under the vinyl. You'll see the decal become transparent as it adheres. Work slowly and methodically to eliminate all air bubbles. Once it's fully positioned and smooth, gently peel off the application tape at a sharp 180-degree angle.
For a permanent bond, especially on curved surfaces, gently heat the edges of the decal with a heat gun or hair dryer on a low setting. This softens the vinyl and helps it conform to the curve. Finally, let the decal cure for 24-72 hours before washing the car.
