
An unopened container of antifreeze (also known as engine coolant) can typically be stored for a long time, often indefinitely, if kept in a sealed container under ideal conditions. Once opened, it's best to use it within 1 to 5 years. However, the actual shelf life depends heavily on the type of coolant and how it's stored. The primary risk is contamination or the degradation of its protective additives, called corrosion inhibitors.
The most critical factor is the type of coolant. Traditional Inorganic Acid Technology (IAT) coolants, often bright green, have a shorter shelf life. Modern Organic Acid Technology (OAT) and Hybrid Organic Acid Technology (HOAT) coolants, which come in various colors like orange, red, or yellow, are more stable and last longer.
Proper storage is essential. Keep the container tightly sealed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Extreme temperatures can cause the chemical composition to break down over time. Moisture entering the container can dilute the coolant and reduce its effectiveness.

My rule of thumb is simple: if the bottle’s been opened, I try to use it within a year or two for peace of mind. If you can pour from the bottle without introducing dirt or water and you cap it immediately, the chemistry should remain effective for a long time—easily five years. The "1-2 year" advice is often a very conservative, safe estimate. For a unopened bottle, the expiration date on the container is more about packaging regulations than the product actually going bad.
