Think of it like a leaky bucket. A new battery holds a lot of water (charge). A small, normal leak (the car's computer memory) is fine. But if you have a big leak—a stuck glove box light, an aftermarket stereo installed wrong—that bucket empties fast. The "big leak" could be drawing 10 or 20 times the normal amount of power. Combine that with an older battery that doesn't hold much water to begin with, and you've got a dead battery in a couple of days, even if you just drove it.

The alternator is the key. Its job is to recharge the battery while you drive.
