It depends entirely on the type of wash. I only use touchless ones. They blast the car with high-pressure water and soap—nothing ever touches the paint. My black car shows every single little mark, and I’ve never gotten a scratch from a touchless wash. If I see those big, fluffy brushes spinning around, I drive right past. Those are just rubbing everyone else’s dirt on your car. Stick with touchless and you’ll be fine.

Yes, they can, but it's not a guarantee. The problem is contamination. Those soft cloth brushes are great until you think about the gravel and grit from the truck that went through before you. That debris gets embedded and acts like sandpaper on your clear coat. If you must use a brush wash, find a busy, high-quality location where the brushes are constantly being rinsed. For a truly scratch-free wash, hand washing with the two-bucket method is the only foolproof way.

I've used both for years on my daily driver. The convenience is unbeatable. I accept that the friction wash might add some very fine swirls over time, but on a silver car, they're practically invisible. For me, getting the salt off in winter is more important than absolute perfection. I just make sure to use the "undercarriage wash" option. If you drive a new luxury car or have a show car, be cautious. For the average commuter car, the risk is often overstated compared to the benefit of regular cleaning.
