Dashboard wax can waterproof rearview mirrors. Dashboard wax can quickly restore the natural luster and texture of car leather seats and interior roof linings, keeping them fresh and soft. It also makes the dashboard and tire surfaces bright and vibrant as new. Functions of Dashboard Wax: Dashboard wax, also known as instrument wax, is a specialized product designed for the texture of automotive leather trim and instrument panels. It effectively prevents aging of dashboards and interior trim, while also offering cleaning, anti-static, and UV protection properties as a liquid wax. Last time I sprayed dashboard wax on my car's rearview mirror to test its water repellency, and indeed the water droplets beaded up and rolled off, lasting about three to four days. However, it's not a professional water repellent by nature, as the wax film breaks down when exposed to wiper cleaning or intense sunlight. Moreover, applying it too thickly can cause glare at night, and once I almost failed to see the car behind me while turning. Now I've switched to a $10+ glass water repellent spray, which lasts about a month, providing a clear, oil-like vision during rain. Actually, the key to rearview mirror water repellency lies in preventing dirt—no spray works if dust and grease build up. Regularly cleaning with alcohol wipes is the real solution.

A friend let me try the waterproof effect of dashboard wax. Right after spraying, water droplets indeed didn't bead on the mirror. But this product is mainly used for maintaining plastic parts on the dashboard. Its solvent and silicone oil components leave an oily film on glass, causing streetlights to refract into halos while driving. The key issue is its waterproofing isn't durable - it washes off after just two car washes. To save money, using soapy water to wipe side mirrors works quite well in emergencies. For long-term waterproofing, I'd recommend hydrophobic coating agents. They're easy to apply, don't attract dust, and at high speeds, raindrops get blown away by airflow, causing minimal impact on visibility.

The auto repair shop technician said that dashboard wax provides short-term water repellency but tends to attract dust and leave stains. In my test, after spraying it on the side mirror, the water beading effect was good for two days, but afterward, water traces spread faster than without it. During the rainy season, I now pre-treat: I use a nano sponge to remove oil film and spray professional glass water repellent. In the modding scene, applying rain repellent film is more popular—it directly alters the glass surface tension, causing water droplets to split and slide off automatically during heavy rain. However, remember not to use dashboard wax on camera lenses, as residual wax can cause blurry imaging and affect the panoramic view.

Applying dashboard wax to the rearview mirror can temporarily waterproof it by filling the glass micro-pores with wax. However, once I over-sprayed it, and after the rain stopped, white wax stains remained on the mirror surface, which were even harder to clean. Moreover, the solvent might corrode the sealing ring of the rearview mirror's turning motor. A practical solution is to switch to folding rearview mirrors, which can block about 70% of rainwater when folded in during rainy days. Covering the car with a car cover when parked is even more hassle-free, as it not only prevents rainwater but also shields against bird droppings and tree resin. In terms of cost, this is more economical than repeatedly dashboard wax, especially for heated rearview mirrors, which don’t require any additional waterproofing treatment at all.

After comparing different products, I found that the water-repellent effect of dashboard wax is not as long-lasting as car wax. When spraying on side mirrors, control the amount: spray thinly from a distance of 20 cm, wait three minutes, and then wipe evenly in circles with a dry cloth. Be sure to avoid the turn signal rubber strips, as it can accelerate aging. Northern car owners need to be especially careful, as sub-zero temperatures can cause the wax film to crack and develop white spots. I've now switched to a fluorine-based glass coating liquid, which doubles the speed of frost removal in winter. Owners who have modified streamlined mirror covers report that the special shape itself reduces rainwater adhesion, making it more convenient than chemical water repellents.
