Yes, a GMC Canyon can fit three car seats, but it's a very tight squeeze that requires careful planning and specific types of car seats. The main challenge is the Canyon's cabin width, which is narrower than a full-size truck. Success depends heavily on the dimensions of the car seats you choose and how they interact with the rear seating and LATCH anchor points.

The GMC Canyon's crew cab configuration, which is essential for this task, features three seat belts in the rear: two outboard positions and a center position. However, the LATCH system (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children), designed to simplify installation, is only available on the two outboard seats. To install a car seat in the center, you must use the vehicle's seat belt, which is a perfectly safe method if done correctly.

The most practical configuration is often to place two forward-facing or booster seats on the sides using the LATCH anchors and a narrower, rear-facing infant seat in the center using the seat belt. The key is the physical width of the seats. Many modern car seats are bulky, and their bases or cupholders can collide, preventing a secure, independent installation for each. You must test the specific combination of seats you own or plan to buy.

This table outlines the key factors for installing three car seats in a midsize truck like the GMC Canyon:

FactorGMC Canyon (Crew Cab)Consideration for Three Car Seats
Rear Bench WidthApproximately 55-56 inchesNarrower than full-size trucks; seat width is critical.
LATCH Anchor PointsTwo sets (Left & Right outboard seats)Center seat installation must use the seat belt.
Center Seat BeltA lap-only belt (in most model years)Ideal for car seat installation as it minimizes complexity.
Real-World FitTight, but achievableRequires "slim" or narrow-profile car seat models.
Alternative VehicleGMC Sierra 1500 (Full-size)Significantly easier with a wider cabin and often three sets of LATCH.

Before purchasing, it is highly recommended to physically test-fit your car seats in the Canyon's rear seat. Bring them to the dealership and attempt to install them to ensure each one can be tightened securely without interfering with the others. While possible, fitting three car seats is one of the most demanding tests of a midsize truck's interior space.

We just went through this with our Canyon. The answer is yes, but you have to be picky about the seats. We used two Diono Radian 3R seats on the sides—they’re known for being narrow—and our Chicco KeyFit 30 infant seat in the middle. It’s tight. Your knuckles will scrape the door frame getting the center one buckled. It works for our family of five, but if I had to do it over, I might have looked harder at a full-size truck for the extra couple of inches of hip room.

As someone who evaluates vehicle interiors, the Canyon's cabin presents a specific challenge. The technical capability exists: three top tether anchors are present, and the seat belts are functional. The limitation is physical interference. Wide car seats with bulky bases or integrated cup holders will not allow for three independent, secure installations. To succeed, you must select seats specifically marketed as "slim" or "three-across" models. The center position, while narrow, is flat, which is an advantage. The primary constraint is the overall hip room measurement.

Focus on safety, not just possibility. The truck can fit three seats, but if they’re crammed in so tight that you can’t get a tight installation or properly buckle the child in, it’s not safe. You need to be able to check each seat independently. There should be less than an inch of movement at the belt path, and you should be able to easily fasten the harness or seat belt on each child. If you have to force anything or the seats are pressing against each other, the configuration is not correct. Always consult a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician for a verification check.

Don't forget the front passenger! With a rear-facing car seat behind the driver, you might have to push the driver's seat forward into an uncomfortable position. Now, imagine doing that times three. Even if you get all three seats in the back, the person in the front passenger seat could lose significant legroom. It's a domino effect on comfort. For a family that regularly transports three young kids, a full-size SUV or a minivan is simply a more functional tool for the job, offering easier access and more comfort for everyone, including the adults.
