Well, hold onto your wallets, because the answer is more crowded than you might think! The dollar coin isn't dedicated to just one stoic face; it's had a rotating cast of characters, most notably through the Presidential $1 Coin Program. This ambitious series set out to honor a veritable who's who of American leadership.
The program, which ran from 2007 to 2016 for general circulation and continued for collectors, featured the presidents in the order they took office. It kicked off with the original, George Washington, and marched chronologically through history all the way to Ronald Reagan for the main circulation series. The U.S. Mint later released a coin for George H.W. Bush for collectors after his passing.
There was a key rule, however, to avoid the awkwardness of jangling a still-living leader in your pocket: a president had to be deceased for at least two years to be eligible. This is why you won't find a Jimmy Carter coin from the program, as he was very much still with us when the series concluded.
And let's not forget the other dollar coin celebrities! Before the presidents took over the spotlight, the coin featured pioneers like Susan B. Anthony and Sacagawea, and even Dwight D. Eisenhower had his time to shine on a larger version of the coin. So, depending on which dollar you're looking at, it could be one of many famous faces.
