To remove an oil stain from a fabric sofa, you should act quickly to absorb as much of the oil as possible. The first step involves using an absorbent powder like cornstarch or baking soda. Apply a generous amount of the powder directly onto the stain, ensuring it is completely covered. Allow the powder to sit on the stain for several hours, or even overnight, to draw the oil out of the fabric fibers.
After the powder has had sufficient time to absorb the oil, use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to thoroughly remove all of it from the sofa. You may need to repeat this process if a significant amount of oil remains.
For any lingering residue, a mild degreasing solution can be effective. Mix a small amount of dish soap, such as Dawn, with water. Before applying, it is crucial to test the solution on an inconspicuous area of the sofa to ensure it does not cause discoloration. If the test spot is fine, gently dab the soapy solution onto the stain using a clean cloth or a soft brush. Avoid rubbing harshly, as this can spread the stain. Once the stain is lifted, use a separate, clean cloth dampened with plain water to blot the area and rinse out the soap. Finally, allow the spot to air dry completely.
