The phenomenon of sofa cushions shifting from their intended position is a common household issue. An analysis of potential remedies reveals two primary strategies for preventing this movement: the application of adhesive fasteners and the use of friction-enhancing underlays.
One of the most frequently cited solutions is the use of hook-and-loop fasteners, such as those sold under the brand name Velcro. This method involves affixing one side of the adhesive-backed strip to the underside of the cushion and the corresponding side to the sofa deck. For maximum efficacy, particularly with heavy use, industrial-strength or fabric-specific versions of these fasteners are often recommended. A similar, though potentially less robust, adhesive option is the use of double-sided carpet tape, which can also secure the cushion to the frame.
An alternative, non-adhesive approach involves placing a non-slip material between the cushion and the sofa base. This technique relies on increasing the coefficient of friction to inhibit movement. Commercially available products for this purpose include specialized anti-slip couch cushion pads. However, materials designed for other applications, such as non-slip rug pads or rubberized shelf liners, can be cut to size and function in a similar capacity. This method is often preferred as it is less permanent and poses a lower risk of leaving residue or causing damage to the upholstery. The selection of the appropriate method depends on factors such as the fabric of the sofa and the desired permanence of the solution.
