Don't let a stray marker mark ruin your day or your beautiful table. It's a frustrating sight, but you'll be amazed at how effectively you can tackle even permanent marker stains using simple items you likely already have. The secret is using the right solvent to break down the ink without harming your table's finish.
Your most powerful and reliable tool in this fight is rubbing alcohol. Isopropyl alcohol is an excellent solvent that dissolves the stubborn pigments in permanent ink. Simply dampen a cotton ball or a soft cloth with the alcohol and start by gently dabbing the stain. This helps lift the ink without spreading it. Then, work from the outside of the stain inward, rubbing gently. This method alone is often enough to completely vanquish the mark.
If the alcohol doesn't quite do it, or you want to try a clever trick, grab a dry-erase marker. It sounds strange, but the solvent in the dry-erase ink can reactivate and dissolve the permanent ink. Just draw directly over the permanent marker stain, let it sit for a second, and then wipe both away with a clean cloth. For a more stubborn stain, a paste made from baking soda and water, or even a non-gel white toothpaste, can provide a gentle abrasive action. Apply the paste, and scrub lightly with a damp cloth.
A word of caution is necessary. While some people recommend melamine sponges, or magic erasers, you should approach them as a last resort. These sponges are a very fine abrasive and can easily dull or even remove the finish from a wood table. The single most important rule, no matter which method you choose, is to test it first on a small, hidden area, like the underside of the table. This will ensure you are lifting the stain and not the finish. With a little patience, you can confidently restore your table to its former glory.
