To effectively remove a stain from a fabric sofa, a methodical spot-cleaning approach is recommended. Before you begin, it is crucial to test any cleaning solution on an inconspicuous area of the upholstery, such as the back or a skirt hem, to ensure it does not cause discoloration or damage to the fabric.
Start by addressing any solid or greasy components of the stain. Scrape off any excess residue with a dull edge. For oily stains, you can sprinkle a generous amount of cornstarch or baking soda directly onto the area. Allow it to sit for about 15 to 20 minutes to absorb the grease, then vacuum it up thoroughly. This preparatory step helps lift the stain from the fibers before applying a liquid solution.
Next, you can create a gentle but effective homemade cleaning solution by mixing one teaspoon of clear dishwashing liquid and one tablespoon of white vinegar into one cup of warm water. Alternatively, a well-regarded commercial product like Folex can be used. Apply the chosen solution by dabbing it onto the stain with a clean, white cloth. It is important to blot the stain rather than rubbing it, as rubbing can spread the stain and damage the fabric fibers. Work from the outside of the stain inward.
Continue to gently blot the area, repeating the process until the stain is no longer visible. Once the stain is lifted, use a separate cloth dampened with plain water to blot the area again. This "rinses" the fabric by removing any residual cleaning solution. Finally, press a clean, dry towel firmly onto the spot to absorb as much moisture as possible and allow the area to air dry completely. For more intensive cleaning, a portable upholstery cleaner can also be effective for both applying the solution and extracting the moisture.
