Removing wax from a velvet sofa requires a careful approach to avoid damaging the delicate pile of the fabric. Based on the situation, you can use either a heating or a cooling method.
First, allow the wax to cool and harden completely. Once solid, gently scrape off as much of the excess wax as you can using a dull edge, like a card or a butter knife. Be careful not to pull or snag the velvet fibers during this process.
The most common method involves using gentle heat. Place a clean, absorbent material, such as a brown paper bag or several layers of paper towels, over the remaining wax stain. Set an iron to a low, no-steam setting. It is crucial to test the iron on an inconspicuous area of the sofa first to ensure the heat does not damage the fabric. Once you've confirmed it's safe, press the warm iron lightly over the paper. The heat will melt the wax, and the paper will absorb it. Lift the paper frequently and move to a clean section to avoid reapplying the wax to the fabric. Repeat this process until the wax is no longer being absorbed. A hairdryer on a low setting can also be used as an alternative heat source.
An alternative approach is the freezing method. Place an ice pack or a bag of ice cubes over the wax spill to make it very cold and brittle. Once the wax is thoroughly frozen, you can carefully chip and flake it off the velvet fibers, again using a dull-edged tool. This method avoids the risks associated with applying heat to a sensitive fabric.
