Removing candle wax from a velvet sofa requires a careful and methodical approach to avoid damaging the delicate pile of the fabric. The most effective technique involves a multi-step process that first removes the solid wax and then addresses any remaining oily residue.
First, it is crucial to allow the wax to harden completely. Attempting to wipe away liquid wax will only spread the stain and push it deeper into the fibers. Once the wax is solid, use a dull-edged tool, such as a card or a butter knife, to gently scrape off as much of the excess surface wax as possible. Be very careful during this step to avoid snagging or tearing the velvet.
Next, you will use a heat transfer method to lift the remaining wax. Place a clean, absorbent material like a brown paper bag or a few layers of paper towels directly over the stain. Set an iron to a low, steam-free setting and press it briefly over the paper. The heat will gently melt the wax, which will then be absorbed into the paper. Lift the paper frequently to check your progress, and reposition it to a clean section to continue absorbing the wax until no more is being lifted from the sofa.
After the wax is removed, an oily spot may remain. To treat this, you can use a solvent suitable for upholstery, such as rubbing alcohol. Lightly dampen a clean, white cloth with the solvent and gently blot the stain. It is imperative to first test any cleaning solution on a small, hidden area of the sofa to ensure it doesn't cause discoloration. Once the spot is treated and has fully dried, you can restore the velvet's texture by gently brushing the area with a soft-bristled brush to lift the pile.
