To deep clean foam couch cushions, begin by removing the foam inserts from their fabric covers. Before introducing any water, thoroughly vacuum all sides of the foam using an upholstery attachment to remove loose dust, hair, and debris. This initial step prevents loose dirt from turning into mud during the washing process.
The most effective method for a deep clean is to wash the cushions in a bathtub. Fill the tub with lukewarm water and add a small amount of a mild cleaning agent, such as a gentle laundry detergent or a scoop of an oxygen-based cleaner like OxiClean. Submerge the foam cushion completely in the soapy water. To work the solution deep into the foam, repeatedly and gently squeeze the cushion or carefully step on it. This action forces the cleaning solution through the foam's pores, dislodging trapped dirt and grime. You will likely notice the water becoming discolored.
After the initial wash, drain the dirty water and press down firmly on the cushion to expel as much of the soapy water as possible. Refill the tub with clean, cool water to begin the rinsing process. Submerge and squeeze the foam again, repeating this cycle of draining and refilling with clean water until the water runs clear and no more soap suds are visible when you press on the cushion. It is crucial to rinse thoroughly to remove all detergent residue.
Proper drying is the final and most critical step to prevent mold and mildew. Do not wring or twist the foam, as this can cause damage. Instead, press out as much excess water as you can. You can also roll the cushions in clean, dry towels to absorb more moisture. For air-drying, place the foam in a well-ventilated area, ideally outdoors in the sun, as sunlight acts as a natural disinfectant. If drying indoors, position fans to circulate air around the cushions. Be patient, as foam can take several days to dry completely. Ensure the foam is 100% dry to the core before putting it back into the covers.
