To effectively clean memory foam couch cushions, it is important to avoid using a washing machine, as the aggressive spinning can cause the foam to tear apart. Instead, a more gentle, manual approach is recommended.
Begin by removing the cushion cover, if it is removable, and vacuuming the foam insert thoroughly on all sides. This will remove any loose dust, hair, or debris before you begin wet cleaning.
For minor spills or stains, spot cleaning is often sufficient. Create a mild cleaning solution by mixing a small amount of gentle laundry detergent or dish soap with warm water. Dampen a clean cloth with this solution and gently blot the stained area. Avoid rubbing, as this can damage the foam's structure. After blotting the stain, use a separate clean cloth dampened with only water to rinse the area by blotting again.
For more significant soiling or to address odors, a deeper cleaning may be necessary. This can be done in a bathtub. Fill the tub with lukewarm water and a small amount of mild detergent. Submerge the foam cushion and gently squeeze it several times to allow the soapy water to penetrate the foam. Drain the tub and carefully press on the foam to expel the soapy water. Refill the tub with clean water and repeat the process of squeezing and rinsing the cushion until all soap residue is gone.
After cleaning, the drying process is critical to prevent mold and mildew. Gently press the foam cushion between clean, dry towels to absorb as much excess water as possible. Do not wring or twist the foam. Place the cushion in a well-ventilated area to air dry completely. You can use a fan to help circulate air and speed up the process. Ensure the foam is 100% dry before placing it back inside its cover and on the couch.
