The spark plugs are located on the top or side of the engine cylinder head, screwed directly into the combustion chamber. On most common inline-4 or V6 engines, you'll find them under ignition coils or spark plug wires connected to the top of the engine. For a visual guide, the easiest way to find them is to trace the thick rubber wires (if your car has them) from the distributor or ignition coil pack; these wires lead directly to each spark plug.

Before you start, always disconnect the negative battery cable for safety. Modern cars often use an Coil-On-Plug (COP) system, where each spark plug has its own individual ignition coil sitting right on top of it.
