Honestly, just open the hood. If your car is a typical sedan or compact SUV, the transmission is almost certainly right there, connected to the engine. It's that big hunk of metal with thick rubber hoses and wires coming out of it. If you don't see anything obvious under the hood besides the engine, then it's probably underneath you, running down the middle of the car.
