when do you check the oil in your car

You should check your engine oil at least once a month, and always before any long trip. The most accurate reading is obtained when the engine is cold (has been sitting for a few hours) and the car is parked on a level surface. Checking it hot can give a misleadingly low reading because some oil is still circulating in the engine.

The process is simple. Pop the hood, locate the dipstick (usually has a bright yellow or orange handle labeled "Engine Oil"), pull it out, and wipe it clean with a rag. Reinsert it fully, then pull it out again to get a true reading. The oil level should be between the two marks or within the cross-hatched area on the dipstick. If it's near or below the minimum mark, you need to add a quart of the correct type of oil for your vehicle.

Check ScenarioRecommended FrequencyKey Consideration
Routine MaintenanceOnce a monthEstablishes a baseline and catches slow leaks.
Before a Long TripBefore departureEnsures engine is prepared for sustained stress.
Older Vehicles (100k+ miles)Every other fill-upOlder engines may consume or leak more oil.
Newer VehiclesAs per dashboard alertsMany modern cars have electronic oil level monitors.
After an Oil ChangeA few days laterVerifies the correct level was filled by the technician.

Consistently low oil can indicate a leak or that the engine is burning oil, a sign of internal wear. Ignoring low oil levels can lead to catastrophic engine damage due to insufficient lubrication. While some modern cars have electronic sensors, physically checking the dipstick remains the most reliable method for most drivers.

I make it a habit to check the oil when I’m filling up the gas tank every couple of weeks. The engine is usually still warm but has had a few minutes to settle. I just pull the dipstick, wipe it, and check it right there at the pump. It takes 60 seconds and gives me peace of mind, especially since my truck has over 150,000 miles on it. It’s way cheaper than a new engine.

My dad, a former mechanic, taught me to always check it on a Saturday morning when the car has been sitting in the garage all night. That’s the only way to get a true, cold reading. He said checking it hot is a guess at best. So now, it’s just part of my weekend routine—coffee, check the oil, check the tire pressure. It’s a five-minute ritual that has saved me from trouble more than once.

Honestly, my car’s dashboard tells me when to check it. It’s a 2022 model with a digital gauge that shows the oil level right on the screen. I still look at the physical dipstick once in a blue moon, just to be sure, but for the most part, I trust the technology. It’s one less thing to worry about. I’d recommend any new car buyer to see if this feature is available.

I’m pretty vigilant because I drive an older performance car that’s known to consume a bit of oil. I check it every single time I get fuel. I want to know exactly how much it’s using. I keep a quart of the specific synthetic oil it requires in the trunk at all times. For me, it’s not just maintenance; it’s about understanding the car’s health and catching a small issue before it becomes a massive repair bill.

Where is the coolant reservoir level mark located on the Buick LaCrosse?

The coolant reservoir level mark on the Buick LaCrosse is located on the coolant reservoir under the vehicle's hood. Coolant prevents the freezing and expansion of the liquid in the cooling system during cold winter parking, which could otherwise crack the radiator or damage the engine block or cylinder head. Vehicle coolant generally needs to be replaced every 2 years or 40,000 kilometers. This is just a reference interval. For commercial vehicles with higher mileage, the replacement interval should be shorter. Since driving conditions vary for each vehicle, the replacement should be based on actual usage. Regularly check the coolant level and replenish it promptly if low. If suspended particles, sediment, or discoloration are observed in the coolant, the system should be cleaned and the coolant replaced immediately. The key specifications for coolant are its freezing and boiling points. Market-available coolants come with various freezing points such as -15°C, -25°C, -30°C, and -40°C. It's advisable to choose a coolant with a freezing point at least 10°C lower than the lowest temperature in your region.

What are the side effects of PEA fuel additives?

PEA fuel additives will not have side effects when added in the specified proportion. If not added in the correct proportion, the improper ratio of fuel additives will not only fail to remove engine carbon deposits but also increase engine carbon buildup, leading to phenomena such as engine shaking and increased vehicle fuel consumption. How to use fuel additives: According to the specified proportion, add fuel first. Generally, a car with a fuel tank capacity of 33 liters can use each bottle twice; for a sedan with a fuel tank capacity of 50-60 liters, each bottle can be used once. After continuously adding 3-5 bottles, you can add one bottle every other tank of fuel or when you feel a decrease in the car's power (usually every 1000-2000 kilometers as a usage cycle), then continuously add 3 bottles again for one cleaning session. Precautions for using fuel additives: Do not add extra gasoline or gasoline additives midway before finishing the prepared tank of fuel; do not use fuel additives frequently.
