Stick to 1996 and newer for a standard OBD-II scanner. That's the rule of thumb. My old '95 Jeep had a weird connector, but my '99 Civic works with every cheap scanner I've bought off Amazon. Just pop the hood or look under the dash near the steering wheel for that familiar 16-pin port. If your car is from this century, you're almost certainly good to go.
