In the United States, your standard car license (Class D) allows you to drive any truck with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,000 pounds or less. This covers the vast majority of consumer-grade pickup trucks and SUVs. GVWR is the maximum operating weight of the vehicle, including its own weight, passengers, fuel, and cargo. You do not need a special commercial driver's license (CDL) for these vehicles.

The most common trucks you can drive are half-ton and midsize pickups. Models like the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, RAM 1500, and Toyota Tundra all fall well below the 26,001-pound threshold. This also includes their SUV counterparts, such as the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition.

For heavier-duty work, you can even operate a one-ton dually pickup like a Ford F-350 or RAM 3500, provided its GVWR is under 26,001 pounds. Many commercial vans, such as the Ford Transit or Mercedes-Benz Sprinter in their standard configurations, are also permissible. The key is always to check the specific vehicle's GVWR, which is found on a sticker inside the driver's door jamb.

Truck CategoryExample ModelsTypical GVWR Range (lbs)License Required (U.S.)
Midsize PickupToyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger5,500 - 7,000Standard Car License
Half-Ton PickupFord F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 15006,500 - 7,500Standard Car License
Heavy-Duty PickupFord F-250, RAM 25008,500 - 10,000Standard Car License
One-Ton DuallyFord F-350 DRW, RAM 3500 DRW11,000 - 14,000Standard Car License (if under 26,001 lbs)
Full-Size SUVChevrolet Suburban, Ford Expedition7,000 - 8,500Standard Car License
Commercial VanFord Transit 250, Ram ProMaster 25008,500 - 9,900Standard Car License

The main restriction comes into play if you plan to use the truck for commercial purposes with a trailer. If the combined weight of the truck and trailer exceeds 26,000 pounds, you would typically need a CDL. For personal use, you're generally safe with any pickup you'd find at a regular dealership.

Pretty much any pickup truck you'd buy from a normal dealership is fine. Your regular license covers a Ford F-150, a Chevy Silverado, a Toyota Tundra—all the usual ones. Even the bigger three-quarter-ton trucks are usually okay. The rule is about the truck's weight rating, not its size. You only need a special truck license for massive commercial rigs, not for hauling your boat to the lake.

The legal limit is based on the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. As long as that number is 26,000 pounds or less, you're good. I was looking at a used Ford F-250 for my landscaping side business, and I made sure to check the doorjamb sticker. It was rated at 9,900 lbs, so I knew my car license was sufficient. It’s a simple check that gives you peace of mind before you buy. Always confirm the GVWR for the specific vehicle.

Think of it this way: if it's a truck you'd realistically park in your driveway or use for a small business, your car license almost certainly covers it. The law is designed so that everyday drivers aren't forced to get a commercial license just to own a pickup. The confusion often comes from seeing large trucks on the road, but those are still considered "light-duty" vehicles. The real cutoff is for semi-trucks and large box trucks, which are in a completely different class.

Focus on the terms "non-commercial" and "light-duty." Your car license is for non-commercial, light-duty vehicles. The 26,000-pound GVWR threshold is the federal line between light-duty and heavy-duty. This classification includes not just pickups but also large vans and SUVs. The system is logical; it regulates vehicles by their potential impact on road safety based on weight and use, not just their appearance. You're legally operating within the intended scope of a Class D license.

Does a Rusty Clutch Need to Be Replaced?

If the rust is not severe, it can be treated with a rust remover. However, if the situation is serious, replacement is the only option. How a clutch works: It is located between the engine and the transmission, transferring the torque stored on the engine's flywheel to the transmission to ensure the vehicle delivers appropriate driving force and torque to the drive wheels under different driving conditions. Components of a clutch: A clutch consists of friction plates, spring plates, a pressure plate, and a power output shaft. Operating states of a clutch: A clutch has three operating states: disengaged when the clutch pedal is pressed, fully engaged when the clutch pedal is not pressed, and partially engaged when the clutch pedal is partially pressed. How the clutch operates: When the vehicle starts, the driver presses the clutch pedal, which pulls the pressure plate backward, separating it from the friction plate. At this point, the pressure plate and the flywheel are not in contact, so there is no relative friction. During normal driving, the pressure plate is tightly pressed against the flywheel's friction plate, creating maximum friction between them. The input and output shafts maintain relative static friction, rotating at the same speed. The third state is the partially engaged clutch, where the friction between the pressure plate and the friction plate is less than in the fully engaged state. Here, the pressure plate and the flywheel's friction plate are in a sliding friction state, with the flywheel rotating faster than the output shaft. Only part of the power from the flywheel is transmitted to the transmission. In this state, the connection between the engine and the drive wheels is somewhat flexible.

Where is the Santana's air conditioning filter located?

The Santana's air conditioning filter is located below the glove box, near the center console. To replace the air conditioning filter, you first need to remove the storage compartment. There are three clips on the air conditioning filter; gently pry them outward to open. Then, use both hands to press the clips on the filter cover and remove the cover plate. Take out the old filter and replace it with a new one. The Santana's exterior design doesn't have many highlights, featuring a relatively simple overall design without exaggerated lines. The waistline running from the front to the rear gives the car body a dynamic tension. The chrome trim below the windows is simple yet aligns with Chinese consumers' aesthetic preferences, adding a touch of sophistication.
