
Find a safe place to pull over, but do not turn off the engine immediately. Keep the engine idling to continue dissipating heat, and open the engine cover to enhance cooling. Do not attempt to continue riding to avoid causing major engine damage. Do not try to open the radiator cap, as there is a high risk of scalding from the ejection of boiling liquid. When white steam suddenly emerges from under the engine cover while riding, or the temperature gauge needle rapidly rises to the high-temperature "H" mark.

A friend of mine rode a liquid-cooled motorcycle to Tibet last year and it overheated several times on the road. The most effective solution is to immediately pull over and turn off the engine—never push it too hard. Let the engine cool down on its own, but remember never to pour cold water directly on it! Splashing cold water on a hot engine can cause the cylinder to crack. It's best to open the engine cover to let the heat dissipate and check the coolant level in the radiator. If it's below the minimum line, add some purified water as an emergency measure. If white smoke comes out of the exhaust or the temperature gauge turns red, call for rescue immediately—chances are the water pump has failed.

This kind of weather is the easiest for bikes to overheat. Last week, I saw a rookie filling the radiator with tap water, and the radiator screen got clogged in just two days. If you really need to add water temporarily, remember to buy purified water from the supermarket. If you encounter high temperatures on the road, don't panic. Experienced riders will keep the throttle steady at 4,000 rpm without letting go, allowing the water pump to circulate and cool down. After parking, first feel the upper and lower radiator hoses. If one is hot and the other is cold, it's basically a stuck thermostat causing the coolant not to circulate.

After riding a liquid-cooled motorcycle for five years, I've concluded a pattern: the water temperature inevitably spikes after ten minutes of continuous uphill climbing. Now, I always keep half a bottle of coolant on the bike. When it overheats, my habit is to first check if the fan is spinning—if not, it's usually a faulty thermal switch. Last year in the mountains, I encountered this issue and ended up cutting the thermal switch wire to keep the fan constantly powered. The fan ran wildly for ten minutes before the temperature dropped. However, upon returning home, I still replaced the radiator, as high temperatures can cause the cylinder gasket to age and leak oil.

A mechanic taught me a few tricks: First, smell the odor when the car overheats. If it smells like engine oil, the cylinder head gasket is blown; a sweet smell indicates coolant leakage. Don't turn off the engine immediately after stopping. Shift to neutral and rev the engine a few times to help the cooling system last longer. There's also a folk remedy of wrapping a wet towel around the hose for physical cooling, but never cover the radiator cap—the steam can scald your skin. If all else fails, call a repair shop; many can deliver coolant to your doorstep quickly.

Once during a mountain road ride, we encountered a collective overheating incident where over twenty vehicles had their radiators boiling like kettles. It was later discovered that mountain winds had blown plastic bags into the cooling fins. Now, when parking for inspection, I always carry a flashlight to check the gaps between the radiator fins, as clogged cooling holes from seeds or insects are more common than water pump failures. Remember to wear thick gloves when handling, and slowly unscrew the radiator cap to let the steam vent from the gap first to release pressure. After returning home, it's recommended to change the antifreeze type, as some low-quality fluids have too low a boiling point and can cause vapor lock under high temperatures.
