Based on recent industry studies, approximately 28% to 35% of millennials in the U.S. know how to drive a manual transmission car. This figure is significantly lower than for previous generations and highlights a major shift in driver preferences. The decline is primarily attributed to the dwindling availability of manual cars in the American market and the widespread adoption of more convenient automatic and continuously variable transmissions (CVTs).

The data from various sources paints a consistent picture. A 2023 study by Hagerty, a specialist in classic car insurance, found that only 28% of millennials (born 1981-1996) were comfortable driving a manual. This number drops even further for Gen Z. In contrast, over 65% of Baby Boomers possess this skill. The scarcity of new manual options is a key driver; currently, less than 1.5% of new cars sold in the U.S. are equipped with a manual transmission.

JD Power2021~35%Manual take rate on new cars is below 1.5%.
Consumer Reports2020~30%Noted a 70% decline in manual offerings over 20 years.

For a millennial considering learning, the pros include potential cost savings on a used car and a more engaging driving experience. However, the practical cons are substantial: limited choice, the inconvenience in stop-and-go traffic, and the fact that most modern automatics offer superior fuel economy and faster acceleration. Unless you have a specific passion for driving or are looking at certain sports cars, the necessity of learning is low. The skill is becoming a niche, much like knowing how to drive a car with a carburetor.

Honestly, most of my friends can't. I'd say maybe 3 out of 10 of us know how to drive stick. When we were learning to drive in the early 2000s, automatics were already the default. My dad tried to teach me in his old truck, but it felt pointless since every car I’ve ever owned or even rented has been an automatic. It's just not a skill you need anymore unless you're a real car enthusiast.

From a market perspective, the percentage is low because the supply has nearly vanished. Automakers have phased out manuals to meet fuel economy standards with more efficient automatics and to focus on electric vehicles, which don't have traditional transmissions. With fewer than 2% of new cars offering a manual, most millennials have never even had the opportunity to learn. The skill is becoming specialized, relevant mainly for certain performance models or as a cost-saving measure when buying an older used car.

I learned last year, and I'm glad I did, but I'm definitely in the minority. It forces you to pay more attention to the car and the road, which makes you a better driver. But trying to find a car to learn on was tough. Dealerships hardly stock them. I'd guess only about a quarter of people my age have bothered. It's not like it used to be, where it was just a standard part of learning to drive.

The generational divide is stark. While over half of older Americans can drive manual, the number plummets for younger demographics. For millennials, estimates consistently hover around 30%. This isn't an issue of ability but of exposure and necessity. The automotive landscape has fundamentally changed, prioritizing convenience and technological integration over driver involvement. The manual transmission is transitioning from a standard feature to an enthusiast's choice, and the statistics reflect that cultural shift perfectly.

What Are the Tricks for Removing Overspray from Car Windows?

Here are some tricks for removing overspray from car windows: 1. For partially dried overspray: You can remove it along with the sludge. First, wash the overspray on the car body with car shampoo, then gently wipe the affected area. Be careful not to apply too much pressure to avoid scratching the paint with tiny particles. Stop once the overspray is completely removed. 2. For fully dried overspray: The process is more complicated than the above. Clean any sand or dirt from the car paint surface, then use polishing sandpaper to sand off the overspray. Follow up with polishing to restore the original gloss of the paint. If possible, consider a full car paint maintenance treatment.
