
Automatic transmission D gear and S gear differ in function, response speed, and power. Different functions: S gear is the sport mode. After shifting into S gear, the gearbox's shifting logic changes, and the engine's operating mode also changes; D gear is the drive gear, which is the normal driving mode. When in D gear, the gearbox usually keeps the engine speed between 2000 to 3000 RPM. Different response speeds: S gear upshifts later. During driving, suddenly stepping on the accelerator will make S gear respond quickly; D gear upshifts with a relatively gentler response speed. After driving an automatic transmission car for five years, I found the biggest difference between D mode and S mode lies in the shift timing. Remember not to use S mode all the time, especially in traffic jams where frequent shifting can accelerate transmission wear, and the engine noise can be quite annoying.

From the perspective of transmission principles, D mode is the economy mode where the computer prioritizes higher gears at lower RPMs. S mode is the sport mode where the computer deliberately delays shifting to maintain higher RPMs. I usually use D mode when driving my kids to school—it's quiet and fuel-efficient. When I want to drive faster, I switch to S mode, like when overtaking trucks on the highway. The RPM instantly jumps to 4,000, delivering exhilarating power. However, prolonged high-RPM operation increases the risk of carbon buildup, so I limit S mode usage to no more than four times a month. Some car enthusiasts worry that S mode harms the vehicle, but as long as you avoid frequent aggressive driving, the impact on transmission lifespan is minimal.

Using S mode for uphill driving is truly exhilarating! Last month, I went on a trip to Zhangjiajie where the mountain roads were steep. Switching to S mode, the car seemed to change its character, maintaining high RPMs without upshifting, providing exceptional power for climbing. If I had used the regular D mode, the engine would stay in the lower RPM range, and I could clearly feel the lack of power when going uphill. I observed the dashboard—in D mode, at 60 km/h, the RPM was only 1500, while in S mode, it surged to 3000. Although the engine noise was louder, overtaking became much smoother. However, in the city, D mode is still more convenient, especially at red lights, as it prevents sudden jerks forward.

As a seasoned driver, I'd like to remind beginners that S mode isn't just for racing. D mode drives like a gentle butler, with slightly delayed throttle response; S mode is like an aggressive coach, delivering instant power when you press the accelerator. I use D mode for my daily commute, where the RPM stays as low as 1500, making it exceptionally quiet. But sometimes at traffic lights when the car ahead is too slow, switching to S mode provides immediate acceleration for overtaking. However, sport mode consumes about 15% more fuel, so avoid using it when the fuel warning light is on. Also note that auto start-stop automatically deactivates when switching to S mode, which is a thoughtful design.

Compared to daily driving, D mode is like walking in casual shoes—smooth, comfortable, and effortless. S mode feels like switching to running shoes, where every press of the accelerator makes the car noticeably more responsive. My real-world fuel consumption tests on the same route showed 8L/100km in D mode versus 9.5L/100km in S mode. This difference stems mainly from higher RPM operation, but it brings faster downshifts—for example, during an 80km/h hard acceleration, it can drop two gears instantly. However, using S mode in traffic jams is frustrating, as the car constantly shifts between 2nd and 3rd gears. I recommend reserving S mode for highway overtaking or hill climbs—D mode is perfectly adequate for regular city driving.
