
When parking an automatic car, you must engage ‘P’ (Park) and fully apply the parking brake (handbrake or electronic brake). This dual-action is non-negotiable for safety and vehicle longevity. Relying solely on ‘P’ places the entire parking load on a single, small component inside the transmission called the parking pawl, risking damage and potential vehicle rollaway.
The ‘Park’ function mechanically locks the transmission’s output shaft, preventing the drive wheels from turning. However, this mechanism is not designed to hold a vehicle’s full weight, especially on an incline. The parking brake is engineered for this primary holding task. Applying it first (on flat ground: brake pedal → parking brake → ‘P’) removes strain from the transmission. This is a critical habit.
Scenarios dictate slight variations. On a flat surface, the sequence is straightforward. When facing uphill or downhill, the final step differs: after applying the parking brake, briefly shift into ‘Neutral’ to release drivetrain tension, then engage ‘P’. This prevents the parking pawl from becoming wedged, making it difficult to shift out of ‘P’ later.
For very brief stops, like at a traffic light, shifting to ‘N’ and holding the foot brake is acceptable, but ‘P’ is unnecessary and can be hazardous if rear-ended. In the rare event of a tow, neutral (‘N’) is typically required. Modern vehicles with automatic engine start-stop systems handle this electronically, but the core rule remains: extended, unattended parking always requires ‘P’ + parking brake.
Never park using only ‘Neutral’ and the parking brake. ‘N’ disengages the transmission lock entirely, making the parking brake the sole failsafe. If it fails, the vehicle will roll. ‘P’ provides the essential mechanical backup. This protocol is standard across the automotive industry, reinforced by owner’s manuals and technician guidelines, to ensure safety and protect your vehicle’s transmission from premature wear or failure.

Here’s what I do every single time, no exceptions. Foot on the brake, car comes to a complete stop. I pull up the electric parking brake—I hear it engage. Then I shift the gear selector into P. It’s a five-second ritual that becomes muscle memory.
My mechanic told me why. That little ‘P’ symbol relies on a tiny metal pin inside the gearbox. If I’m on a slope and just slam it into P, all that car weight is on that pin.
