You can safely tow a front-wheel drive (FWD) car with a dolly by lifting its front (driven) wheels off the ground. For rear-wheel drive (RWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicles, using a dolly is generally not recommended and can cause serious damage to the transmission; these cars require a flatbed trailer.

The key factor is which wheels are driven. In a FWD car, the engine's power is sent to the front wheels. When you lift the front wheels onto the dolly, the drivetrain is disconnected from the road, preventing damage. However, you must ensure the transmission is in neutral and the steering wheel is unlocked.

For RWD vehicles, lifting only the rear wheels with a dolly leaves the driven wheels on the ground. This means the transmission output shaft is still connected to the wheels. As the vehicle is towed, the transmission's internal components will spin without proper lubrication, leading to rapid and costly damage. The same severe risk applies to AWD vehicles, as power is distributed to all wheels. Towing any AWD car with a dolly, even with two wheels off the ground, can cause binding and destruction within the transfer case and differentials.

The only safe method for RWD and AWD vehicles is a flatbed trailer or trailer with full-vehicle loading, where all four wheels are completely off the ground. Always consult your vehicle's owner's manual for the manufacturer's specific towing guidelines, as there can be exceptions.

Drivetrain TypeDolly Towable?Safe Towing MethodPrimary Risk
Front-Wheel Drive (FWD)YesFront wheels on dolly, rear wheels rolling.Incorrectly securing vehicle; not placing transmission in neutral.
Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD)NoFlatbed trailer (all wheels off ground).Transmission destruction due to lack of lubrication.
All-Wheel Drive (AWD)NoFlatbed trailer (all wheels off ground).Drivetrain binding and damage to transfer case/center differential.
Four-Wheel Drive (4WD)NoFlatbed trailer; some models can be towed with transfer case in neutral (consult manual).Severe damage to transmission and transfer case.

Stick with front-wheel-drive cars if you're using a dolly. Just lift the front wheels and you're good to go. But if it's a rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, forget the dolly. You'll wreck the transmission. It's not worth the thousands in repairs. For those, you absolutely need a flatbed trailer to carry the whole car. Always double-check your car's manual to be sure.

As a rule of thumb, think about which wheels power the car. If it's a front-wheel drive, the dolly goes under the front tires. That's the only scenario where a dolly is a safe bet. Anything else—rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, trucks, SUVs—requires a flatbed. The repair bill from a simple dolly tow mistake can easily run over $5,000. When in doubt, go with the flatbed; it's the only way to be 100% certain you won't cause damage.

I learned this the hard way after towing a buddy's rear-wheel-drive sedan. We thought a dolly would be fine, but it fried his transmission. The mechanic explained that the engine wasn't running to pump fluid, so the gears ground themselves up. Now I only use a dolly for my Honda Civic. For anything else, I rent a full flatbed. It's a bit more expensive upfront, but it’s way cheaper than a new transmission. Always error on the side of caution.

The decision is simpler than it seems. It all comes down to the drivetrain. Front-wheel drive vehicles are dolly-friendly. For all other types—rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, and four-wheel drive—a dolly is a hard no. The risk of mechanical damage is extremely high. The safest, most universal solution is a flatbed trailer, which eliminates any risk by lifting all four wheels off the pavement. This is one area where following the correct procedure saves you from a massive headache and an even bigger repair bill.

How long does it take to charge a depleted car battery by driving?

It takes about one hour of driving to fully charge a depleted car battery. Precautions for battery charging include: 1. Connect directly to the battery for charging to avoid removing it, as this may cause data loss; 2. If the battery voltage is 10% lower than the rated voltage, it may lead to battery depletion; 3. Avoid exposing the battery to water during charging. The functions of the car battery are: 1. When starting the engine, the battery supplies power to the starting system, ignition system, and electronic fuel injection system; 2. It powers the car's electrical equipment when the engine is off or idling at low speed; 3. It assists in supplying power to electrical devices when the generator output is insufficient; 4. It mitigates voltage surges in the electrical system, protecting the car's electronic devices; 5. It stores excess electricity generated by the alternator.
