National 5 vehicles are those that comply with the National 5 emission standards, which is the fifth stage of China's pollutant emission standards for motor vehicles, referred to as "National 5 Standard". The National 5 Standard is equivalent to the fifth stage emission standard implemented in Europe. In accordance with the national action plan for air pollution prevention and control, it imposes more stringent restrictions on motor vehicle emissions such as nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and suspended particles. Compared to the National 4 Standard, the National 5 Standard can reduce nitrogen oxide emissions from light-duty vehicles by 25% and from heavy-duty vehicles by 43%. Based on the annual registration of approximately 350,000 motor vehicles in Shanghai, it is estimated that the annual increase in new vehicles could reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by about 1,000 tons per year.
