It then immediately uses powerful suction to extract the dirty water, pulling out dissolved grime, allergens, and moisture. This prevents over-wetting, a common DIY mistake that can lead to mold and mildew. The cleaning solution used is typically a pH-neutral, foam-based upholstery shampoo designed to lift dirt without leaving residues that attract more soil.
For sanitization and stain treatment, detailers use dry vapor steam cleaners (reaching over 200°F/93°C). This high-temperature steam kills bacteria, dust mites, and other pathogens without chemicals, effectively eliminating odors at their source. It’s often a preparatory step before extraction for heavily soiled areas. Industry standards note that sustained steam at these temperatures can eliminate up to 99.9% of common bacteria and germs on fabric surfaces.
For daily maintenance and light cleaning, professionals rely on soft-bristled detail brushes and robust vacuum cleaners with upholstery attachments. They agitate the fabric to loosen dry soil before vacuuming it away. For spot cleaning, they use microfiber towels and mild, dedicated upholstery cleaners, never household products like laundry detergents which can leave sticky residues.
The choice of tool depends on the job's severity. A maintenance clean uses brushing and vacuuming. A standard interior detail employs hot water extraction. A severe contamination or odor issue requires a combination of dry steam and extraction. Agitate vigorously with your brush, then use the extractor’s powerful suction to pull the moisture out. Go slow, making multiple passes to remove as much water as possible. This is the DIY secret to avoiding mildew. Let the car air out with windows cracked until bone-dry.

For classic car owners, the approach is conservative. We avoid saturating fabrics, especially on vintage models where replacement materials are unavailable. My regimen focuses on preservation.
Dry cleaning is first. I use a soft natural-fiber brush and a vacuum with reduced suction to gently remove loose particulate. For deeper cleaning, I prefer a low-moisture method.
