E85, a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline, requires specialized engine and fuel system components resistant to ethanol's corrosive properties. This means the cost savings only materialize if the price of E85 is significantly lower than regular unleaded in your area.

Full-size sedans like the Impala and police vehicles were often FFVs to reduce operating costs for large fleets. For an individual, the math is straightforward: calculate your cost per mile. Divide the fuel price by your MPG. If the cost per mile for E85 is lower, it's a saving. However, the lower energy density of ethanol almost always guarantees fewer miles per tank, a trade-off for potential per-mile savings.

I focus on the environmental angle. E85 is popular among drivers wanting to reduce their reliance on fossil fuels, as ethanol is a renewable biofuel. However, the "green" benefit is debated, considering the energy used in farming and distillation. The performance community also appreciates E85 for its high octane rating (typically over 100), which allows for more aggressive engine tuning in high-performance applications without causing engine knock.
