Beyond that, the high cost of the vehicle and hydrogen fuel itself, along with questions about the overall environmental efficiency, present significant barriers.
The most immediate challenge is refueling station availability. Unlike electricity, which is accessible almost everywhere, public hydrogen stations are extremely rare and concentrated in a few areas, primarily in California. This limits long-distance travel and makes FCEV ownership a non-starter for those outside specific ZIP codes.
Secondly, the cost is prohibitive. The vehicles themselves carry a high MSRP, and the price of hydrogen per kilogram is volatile and often expensive. While fuel cell technology is sophisticated, converting hydrogen gas into electricity to power the motor, the production and transportation costs of the fuel are still high.
From an environmental standpoint, the "green" claim depends entirely on how the hydrogen is produced. Most hydrogen today is "gray hydrogen," made from natural gas, which generates carbon emissions. Truly clean "green hydrogen," produced using renewable energy, is still scarce and costly.
