When changing the oil, the oil filter should also be replaced, as there is a significant amount of oil and sludge around the filter, which can be difficult to remove when the engine is cold. Precautions to take when changing oil: 1. Ensure that all the old oil is completely drained before adding new oil, as residual old oil can contaminate the new oil, reducing its lubrication effectiveness and performance. 2. The oil filter usually has a rubber sealing ring, which should also be replaced when changing the filter. 3. Be careful when removing the drain plug to avoid stripping its threads.

It is indeed beneficial to let the engine run for a while before changing the oil. I recommend warming up the car for about 10 minutes, as the old oil will flow better when heated, allowing for more thorough drainage. Remember to let the temperature gauge rise to the middle position but not fully heat up, otherwise you may risk burns. However, this also depends on the season; in winter, you might want to warm it up a couple of minutes longer.
